Settlers Run Golf & Country Club
14 August 2009
Combining a challenging Greg Norman-designed golf course, world-class residential facilities and contemporary Australian architecture, Settlers Run is proving a magnet for golfers and home seekers alike.
Set among rolling hills at Cranbourne South in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, Settlers Run is poised for a bumper 2009 as residents continue to move in and the golf course matures and becomes more established.
The “Norman” stamp is all over the 6607 metre championship course, which provides terrific rewards for golfers keen to take on bunkers and water features.
And for those happy to play conservatively, scoring opportunities abound on the par 72 open layout.
The creators of the $300 million project, Medallist Developments, have meticulously planned Settlers Run as one of Melbourne’s premier lifestyle locations with resort-style facilities on your front doorstep. And it’s not just for golfers, there’s something for everyone.
Medallist is a specialist international development company and since 1997 is a joint venture between Greg Norman’s Great White Shark Enterprises and Macquarie Group Limited. Urban Pacific Limited, a subsidiary of Macquarie and an award winning developer in its own right, manages the development on behalf of the joint venture.
The boutique 500-home residential community adjoining the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne is located in part of Melbourne’s booming south-eastern corridor and is only a short drive to the city’s CBD and popular Mornington Peninsula.
Settlers Run Project Director, Mr Daniel Smith, says the development’s undisputed showpiece is the Greg Norman-designed golf course.
“It’s perfectly proportioned, maintaining the area’s natural ambience with significant green, open spaces and a truly world-class golf course.
“When designing the course, we wanted to incorporate a bit of history to complement the modern architecture and sustainability of the houses and clubhouse facilities while also creating an attractive vista for players.
“Several historical features, such as a windmill on the third and a hay-bailing machine on the second, as well as clever use of rustic fence posts reflect the site’s grazing past.”
With residents now moving in, Medallist is looking forward to seeing its vision for Settlers Run being realised.
Designed to provide the perfect blend of lifestyle and location, more than two thirds of the development is dedicated to parks and gardens.
Mr Smith says that Greg Norman was particularly “hands on” during the design of the golf course and personally marked the exact locations where he wanted tees and greens placed.
The Settlers Run course has been designed with drought in mind, with a view to keeping it green all year-round. The secret is the exceptional drainage and the use of ‘Class – A’ recycled water.
Bunkering is also a key feature of the design, with Greg Norman using dramatic sand-faced bunkers for which Melbourne sandbelt courses are renowned.
In typical Norman style, many holes encourage golfers to take the course on. For the longer hitters, holes such as the 375 m par 4 seventh and 303m 17th present mouth-watering prospects.
At the seventh you can take on a collection of fairway bunkers to give yourself a short approach to the undulating green.
The 17th is an outstanding hole for golfers at every level. Standing on the elevated tee overlooking a lake, big hitters can load up and aim for the green and an eagle putt while a more conservative approach can set up an easy par.
Ahead to the 402 m 18th, which is literally the grand finale. A tight drive over a lake and through a chute of trees sets you up for a long iron uphill into another undulating green.
The design of the Settlers Run Golf & Country Club follows a contemporary style, featuring the use of natural building materials such as rammed earth, corten, alucabond and timber.
The Golf & Country Club follows on from the golf course’s environmental initiatives and incorporates a number of sustainable design principles, including a 30,000 litre water tank to service the toilets.
Award-winning architects Williams Boag designed the Golf & Country Club, which includes a bistro/bar, alfresco terrace and formal function rooms seating up to 150 guests.
The impressive Golf & Country Club overlooks the 18th green and is already proving popular as a vantage point to watch the field come in over a drink and snack from the bistro. There are terrific views of the course as well as back to the Melbourne CBD from the bar/bistro area.
The recent opening of the Golf & Country Club gave residents and members further access to world-class dining and recreational facilities. Underlining the appeal, more than 160 members joined during the first six weeks of operation.
Members also have access to a fully-equipped gymnasium, 25 metre indoor swimming pool, two tennis courts and a sauna.
Of course, there is a fully-stocked pro shop under the supervision of former Professionals – and husband and wife team – Steve Kent and Jane Bell.
Jane is General Manager of the Settlers Run Golf & Country Club while Steve is in charge of golf operations.
Working and playing in both local and professional golf tournaments, the couple, who met and fell in love during their traineeship years in Melbourne, feel that working together at Settlers Run is a blessing in disguise.
Steve, who is part of the worldwide Troon Golf Management network, says it is a dream assignment.
“Jane has worked at six of Troon’s properties but when we were offered the chance to work together at Settlers Run it really was almost too good to be true. It’s just perfect,” Steve says.
“The site provided a great landscape for Greg Norman to create a fantastic golf course and he has certainly done that. I believe that it will soon be regarded as one of the best layouts of its type in Australia.”
The Settlers Run Golf & Country Club hosts a range of functions including group golf days and major corporate golfing events and will soon host the inaugural 2008 Corporate Cup.
Designed to provide local golfers with the rare opportunity to get a taste of Settlers Run, the event invites all local businesses to battle it out for the title of 2008 Corporate Cup Champion.
Sales figures show that about 40 per cent of the land buyers at Settlers Run classify themselves as golfers, while the remainder seek the lifestyle that accompanies a masterplanned community surrounded by open space, tranquillity and top notch facilities.
Settlers Run is well serviced by public transport and arterial roads and is close to major activity centres in Cranbourne.
As part of the development, Medallist improved the nearby Pearcedale Road, which has since made a substantial contribution to the Pearcedale and Frankston Road intersection which is under reconstruction at the moment.
Since November 2007 leading Australian jockey Damien Oliver has been Settlers Run premier Victorian ambassador.
Wherever possible, Damien will swap his silks for spikes as he tackles the green and indulges in his other great love, golf.
“The first time I saw the design of the course and the Golf & Country Club I knew I wanted to be a part of Settlers Run,” Damien said.
“To be chosen as an ambassador alongside the likes of Greg Norman is a huge thrill and I look forward to representing such a great facility.
“The course is located close to the Cranbourne Turf Club so it will allow me to enjoy my two greatest passions.”
Settlers Run is the perfect site for a premium lifestyle development and offers community parks and gardens, magnificent facilities and lots of space.
Settlers Run boasts homesites sizes up to 1,270m2, starting from the low price of $185,000*. At this price it is perfect for growing families or for people looking to upsize. Demand is expected to be strong.
The anticipated Greg Norman Collection will be released soon, which features a selection of exclusive home and land packages that will appeal to the higher end of the market.
