Damien Oliver swaps his silks for spikes at Settlers Run

13 December, 2007

One of Australia’s leading jockeys, Damien Oliver, will swap his silks for spikes after joining Melbourne’s premier new golf course - Settlers Run Golf & Country Club.

Damien will act as an ambassador, sharing the role of being the ‘face’ of the Club with its course designer and number one member - Greg Norman.

Winner of two Melbourne Cups, four Caulfield Cups and two Cox Plates, Damien has also gained international acclaim, riding in Hong Kong, Ireland and England.

When he is not on the track, Damien’s other great passion is golf and he said he looked forward to joining the Club and being an ambassador.

“The first time I saw the design of the course and the Golf & Country Club I knew I wanted to join Settlers Run,” Damien said.

“To be chosen as an ambassador alongside the likes of Greg Norman is a huge thrill and I look forward to representing such a great facility.

“The course is located close to the Cranbourne Turf Club so it will allow me to enjoy my two greatest passions,” he said.

Settlers Run Club Manager Jane Bell said the Golf & Country Club could not have a better ambassador than Damien.

“Damien is one of Australia’s best known horse racing identities and we are excited he has become a member of Settlers Run and agreed to act as an ambassador,” Jane said.

“Damien has crafted a reputation of being the best in his field and that is also our aim for Settlers Run – to be among the best golfing facilities in Melbourne.

“The next time a member or guest plays at Settlers Run they could be teeing it up with one of Australia’s favourite sporting celebrities,” she said.

Settlers Run Golf & Country Club opened its doors in October 2007.

The golf course has seen Greg Norman draw inspiration from Melbourne’s renowned courses to create a dramatic, natural golf setting just 45 minutes drive south-east of the Melbourne CBD.

The design of the 18-hole championship golf course takes advantage of the undulating landscape and native vegetation to create a layout that complements the surrounding environment.

The bunkering is a key feature of the design, with Greg Norman using dramatic sand faced bunkers for which the Melbourne sandbelt is renowned.
